Facebook gets Cold!!??
My Intro/Apology:
I know its been a while sense I last posted something and that is because I got a little lazy, but its fine because I got a double dose for you guys. The interesting this is that I log onto my computer and put in a random news website that popped in my head and Facebook is the top headline, published 8 minutes ago. Both Facebook and the January 6th riots are paying my bills when it comes to getting this done, they always have something going on.
Now Back to the Information:
So I know you guys remember about a year ago when the vaccine began to come out and their was a group of people wanted them, hated them, and didn't care. Along with the hateful people came a bunch of their own misconceptions about the newly acquired vaccine. To combat this Facebook literally pushed this kind of information further down peoples feed.
One group stated that the reason they didn't do what was mentioned above was they are all about "HUMAN ENGAGEMENT + EYEBALLS = Ad REVENUE.
***Personally from the information being shared, about Facebook, they come off to me as being the biggest keyboard warriors and instigators in the galaxy.***
The most important things being said right now...
People claim when it comes to vaccines (and the like) they (Facebook) are more focused on being polarizing.
One suggestion that was given to Facebook was to turn off all comments sections under post that had to do with the Vaccine, they never did it :/
There are employees at Facebook, that are wondering themselves why don't they implement the things that have been talked about from the whistleblower.
Because of the information coming out officials were scared that many of the at risk group of people were not going to be willing and take it.
The comment of section of Facebook posts could not have been regulated because there were no laws in place to say stop.
In Conclusion...
There are a couple of reasons why this could be happening. The first being that there is some law somewhere about giant tech companies and how they approach peoples freedom of speech. Another thing could be that the only thing that they care about because they are a billion dollar company, is the money. You can't ask a billion dollar company to be in tune with the average citizen because their motive is the dollar.
Question:
What do you think is going on, do you believe that it is one of the two options I mentioned, or is it something else going on that I missed?
You bring up some interesting points. In The Facebook Dilemma, one of the former Facebook employees mentions that the polarized the language used in a post is, the more likely its is to be pushed by Facebook's algorithm. I think this is one of the main factors in the how misinformation about Covid and the vaccine started. Also, like you said, Facebook's primary motivations isn't creating a safe environment for users, it's money. I think it's also important to take into account how far removed Facebook's top employees are from the effects of the things they allow on their app. These effects are mostly felt by the everyday user, and have the potential to greatly impact said user's life and choices.
ReplyDeleteI agree that majority of Facebook's logistics and workings is for revenue. I feel like that's why we see what we see on our individual timeline-- the more time spent on the app the more money the corporation makes (via advertisement space). Those who partake in discussions about such topics seem to fall down a rabbit hole and surround themselves in more of the topic given the algorithm. However, you cannot escape at least one post about our current situation about the vaccine; especially as mandates have began to roll out. Regardless, it seems that Facebook has benefitted from such controversy as the revenue has only gone up since the beginning of the pandemic. I think it is imperative to understand Facebook, you must understand how to draw users back to the app from other apps. Personally, I believe the use of polarizing language is entertaining (and dangerous) to many users, for some reason there is an urge to "own" some random profile that disagrees with you. This is mostly speculation on my end. However, I believe money is the driving force behind this particular problem, and how the corporation response to these problems are an after-thought.

ReplyDeleteI have to agree with your assessment that Facebook has their fair share of people that spread misinformation. On top of that, they blindly believe posts from other people on the platform. Facebook is a platform that I have stayed away from for many years, because it is not enjoyable for me anymore. The amount of people arguing and the topics they are arguing about are not what I want to spend my time on. The comment sections alone are blasphemous and need to be monitored more heavily, but it does not seem like a priority for the company. I do not think that Facebook changing their name to Meta is going to solve these issues. I think you make a valid point that billion dollar company, such as Facebook, cannot understand what average citizens want. We learned about “fake news” in this class and Facebook is a cesspool of “fake news.” People need to be wary of what they read on any social media platform, but Facebook is one that there is always something untrue floating around as fact. Great post!
