When Senators start to care about Snapchat...Stay on Facebook Bro!!
This is my second post of today and this one is going to be more informal than normal. This is one of those things where an politician makes a claim that social media is ruining our youth. It is giving me the same vibes of you telling your mom your hungry and she say's you wouldn't if you weren't on your phone all day. LOL.
Onto the meat and potatoes...
The senators are claiming that these sites are taking advantage of young people by showing them things from eating disorders to sexually explicit content and abusive drugs. From this the one these senators want is legislation that hinges down the protection of children on these apps.
Claim #1: Big Tech preys on children and teens to make more money.
Then they bring up our best friend Facebook and talk about how Instagram is harming teens. Saying the main focus on Instagram is to get the attention of young people, the same goes for places like TikTok and Snapchat. The Senator at the lead of this even went to question the higher ups of Snapchat and Google and they answered that their apps already apply to these guidelines.
Ways that the Companies have changed.
***Snapchat is getting rid of people use the platform to sell drugs
**The higher up claimed that it isn't an algorithm controlled app it is more of a people controlled app.
***On TikTok people under a certain age can't even use the message feature.
**A senator got on TikTok because it is owned by the Chinese which is totally out of the scope of this conversation. The only logical sense this makes is that he is scared the app is sharing data with the Chinese Government.
***For YouTube, it was said that they have parental controls and they even have section strictly for kids.
What do you guys think about this argument that social media is ruining kids? Also do you think that is the job of Senators and the like to get involved to try to combat this?
